The Scottish town of Ayr lies on the banks of the River Ayr near to the beautiful Firth of Clyde and is an important port in the region.
Home to around 46,000 inhabitants, the town lies immediately to the South of the town of Prestwick, which is home to one of the countrys busiest airports.
Previously an important ship-building centre, the towns port has always been at the heart of Ayrs economy, nowadays its main use is for the export of both coal and local fish. The town also has its own attractive stretch of beach which is popular with tourists and locals alike.
The town has long been a major local centre for retail, with one of Scotlands first department stores opening in Ayr at the end of the nineteenth century, and today it offers many national chain stores especially at the newly opened Ayr Central Shopping Centre.
